Alumni Praise!

Congratulations to FMCS Alumni, Jardin McCarthy! She is one of five high school students to receive the Hillmyer-Tremont Student Athlete Foundation Scholarship - one of five recipients of $16,000 college scholarships!

Since 1998, the foundation has distributed more than $750,000 in scholarships to Lee County high school seniors. The awards are based on academic and athletic achievement, as well as financial need. The foundation is named after Monk Hillmyer, who passed away September 29, 2008, and Elmer Tremont, a Florida High School Coaches Hall of Fame member who coached basketball at Fort Myers and Cypress Lake high schools.

Jardin McCarthy
McCarthy played varsity basketball for four seasons, including three as team captain at Cape Coral. McCarthy also played volleyball and was a member of the track team. Besides playing sports, she volunteered tutoring high school and elementary school students. McCarthy will graduate with a 4.8 GPA and plans to continue her education at Florida Gulf Coast's business program.

Children are a Blessing

Not something that I have done before, but that does not mean that the Lord won't give me something I can't handle. I was humbled and honored today to dedicate a baby to the Lord. The Welch family, who had three students attend FMCS years ago, were so blessed by the ministry of the school and the effect that missions trip had on Mr. Welch and their son Wayne, had asked me to dedicate their grandchild, Jacob Christopher. Jacob is the son of their daughter, America, and is 8 month old. You never know how the Lord will use you, and it was great to visit with old friends at the ceremony held at their home.

From our third gade teacher and Spelling Bee Coordinator, Miss McLaughlin on Friday:

"Today was a long, but exciting day. I am so proud of each student that was there today. They did a wonderful job representing our school. You should all be proud of your students. I am happy to announce that we did have two ribbon winners. Laura Gequelin came in 3rd place in the 1st grade category and Sarah Swiersz came in 1st place in the 4th grade category. They did such a fantastic job. I was so happy to see how many families came out to support these kids as well. "

NOT MARCH MADNESS - Math Madness Week 2009

For the first time in school history our students in grades 2-6 had a full week of our new Accelerated Math program. Our 2008-09 PTF helped us purchase the program and helped us get it started. In our first year, the students have used the program once a WEEK BUT this past week they have had it every day! For those who struggle, a chance to work on skills; for those who are gifted in math, a chance to excel! Chick-Fil-A has sponsored this week with a free kids meal for every student. The teachers have done an excellent job and we appreciate volunteers that have helped as well.

Teachers have provided many incentives for the students hard work:
- Icee pops
- Extra recess
- A snack and free time at the end of the day
- Market Day tickets
- CANDY!!!
- Popcorn "party"
- Star stickers and incentive charts
- Pizza party
- "Super Student" award
- An animal eraser for every 2 objectives, certificate for 10 tokens at Chuckie Cheese for reaching week goal, and yesterday everyone in the class received a homework pass for the whole class passing at least one objective!

Teacher comments:
- "they're loving it"
- "They are SO excited every day to do this! They are cheering each other on for good scores and having a great attitude. "
- "They get so excited and yes, they have surprised me by wanting to keep going and cheering each other on; it is so much fun to watch them get excited about learning."
- They have really loved the challenges and are working to meet their goals. There is quite a competition in my room to see who will have the top objectives met.
- The kids are really enjoying it. (one of my students) told me yesterday that this is her favorite week of school so far!"

7th Grade - World Cultures Day!

( Even Mrs. Mitchell dressed up for Ireland!)

Mrs. Mitchell's 7th graders dressed up today representing a country that they were reporting on. They had a couple of stipulations: they must stay dressed in their country attire from the moment they get here in the am until they leave in the pm; and their costume must not, in any way, cause a distraction. (makes sense) The students did a great job with oral presentations, dress-up and food from their country!

During the day, the teachers and staff were encouraged to participate: "These students are ready for you to ask them about their country and tell you several interesting facts they learned about it. THEREFORE - Please feel free to ask away!!! AND - if you are impressed with their response and you are able, drop me an email and that student will be rewarded a bonus point!" Countries represented: Bulgaria, Thailand, Venezuela, Hungary, Argentina, Madagascar, Spain, Indonesia, Colombia, England, China, Vietnam, South Africa, Morocco, Cambodia, Australia, Belgium, Egypt, Brazil, Pakistan, Russia, and Poland.

Student's Artwork Will Be Showcased in the Community

From Mrs. Sinex, Art Teacher at FMCS - Three of our students won prizes at the CREW (Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed) Wildflower contest. First place was Parker Wunderlich, Third Place was Tyler Goguen and Honorable Mention was Kelsi Bevington. They will be awarded their prizes on Saturday, March 28th, during the wildflower festival!

CREW is a 60,000-acre watershed spanning Lee and Collier Counties. CREW's majestic 5,000 acre marsh is the headwater for the entire watershed which includes the famous Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary directly to the south. The contest was open to all 3rd – 12th grade public, private, and home-schooled students and college students in Charlotte, Lee, Hendry and Collier Counties.

Winning entries will be published on the CREW Trust website, displayed at our annual wildflower festival, and displayed at the Sugden Welcome Center at Florida Gulf Coast University for 1 year.

MVP - Most Valuable Parent

MVP in sports stands for "Most Valuable Player" - at FMCS, it stands for "Most Valuable Parent."

This year we started our new Parent University set-up this year (it used to be called Parent-Teacher Fellowship). If I could name parents to a Parent University Hall of Fame, one of the first inductees would be Mrs. Kelly Richards. (Her son Brian is now in 8th grade at FMCS)

Over the past two years, she has been the "chairperson" to oversee the BoxTops collection/promotion and Used Uniform Sales.
Due to her hard work, and I am not alone in this, I will never look at a boxtop the same again. She has become the "Boxtop Queen" and helped raise money for the school. Most recently: the final submission of Box Tops for the 2008/2009 school year was sent this month. A check in the amount of $890.40 should arrive after April 15th. (Now we start collecting for next year.) THANK YOU STUDENTS AND PARENTS!
The last two years she has helped us raise: 07/08 - $3,089.17 and 08/09 - $2,805.20, for a two year total of $5,894.37!

But that's not all: Used uniform sales over the last two years: $4,321.00 this year and $5,535 last year for a total of $9856 raised for the school! She has also re-organized all the clothes, washed them, and created a great set-up on the west wing, first floor area for the store.
Mrs. Richards, ALL OF US AT FMCS would like to thank you for your commitment and dedication to our school, the children, parents and to Christian education.

This morning our 8th graders, who will be going to Corpus Christi, Texas on April 1st for their missions trip, were each assigned to an elementary class to: tell who they are, where they are going, what they will do in Texas and pass out prayer cards so the children will renember to pray for them.
