4th & 5th Grade in the Middle School This Week

The 4th and 5th graders had a taste of middle school this week - specifically the opportunity to participate in science labs with Mrs. Leatherman in the middle school science lab.

Here's Mrs. Leatherman's descriptions of what they did:

4th grade- they are studying plants. We did a lab that will show us the affects of garbage and waste on the environment-plants-an animal’s ecosystem. We tied all of this in with their recycling project they do. Each group put beans in 3 different Petri dishes. They then put 3 different liquids in the Petri dishes: Constant was water and the variables were rubbing alcohol and coffee. I prepared a liquid and let the beans soak overnight. They are going to watch the beans over the next week and see what the beans look like. Hopefully, this will help them see the effect we have on the environment when we don’t properly dispose of waste.

5th grade- They are studying ecosystems. We did a lab that showed them how we can use garbage to create energy. The lab was titled Biomass ( the usage of waste to create energy) They created ovens and we burned a peanut, marshmallow and a piece of wood. We checked the temp of the water to see what waste product raised the temp the most. Hopefully, this helped them see that we can create a better ecosystem for animals by utilizing the garbage the we put in a land field, as a form of energy.

Many thanks to Mrs. Leatherman and the teachers for providing this special project.
