Learning Resource Program Praise!

"I wanted to let you know that READING HORIZONS Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself (for elementary) and READING HORIZONS Courseware (for intermediate to adult) has been installed on my computers in the Learning Resource Room. This was purchased with public school stimulus monies through FDLRS (Florida Diagnostic Learning and Resources System) specifically to benefit students who we serve who came with IEPs from the public school. Of course, it is a valuable resource for all students we serve who need reading support.

I am excited to have it finally here and plan to have students working with it as soon as I can get the management part set and preview some of the lessons.

Praise the Lord for this blessing!"

“School 2 School – Hope 4 Haiti”

QUISQUEYA CHRISTIAN SCHOOL update – Port au Prince, Haiti

Many have lost family members, many are injured, have lost their houses, their businesses etc. There will be a temporary hospital/surgery room in our chapel and a trauma centre on the basketball court starting Friday Jan 15. We hope to be able to have a water and food distribution from our campus also. Our soccer field is now the temporary living area for some of our staff and national workers, the PreK/K playground is occupied by children an orphanage from our community. The situation in Haiti at this time makes it impossible to function as a school…..
You may be asking, “What can I do to help?”. Next week, FMCS will be sponsoring a coin drive to help provide needed funds for those affected by this disaster. As you may all ready know, organizations are requesting monetary donations in lieu of boxed goods or supplies. Therefore, FMCS will be collecting money to benefit our ACSI “sister school” in Port au Prince, Haiti.

• Tuesday, January 19 – Donations will be collected by homeroom teachers.

• Wednesday, January 20 – Donations will be collected. In addition, Christian T-shirt dress down - $1.00 – money collected will also be donated to the relief fund.

• Thursday, January 21 – Donations will be collected by homeroom teachers.

• Friday, January 22 – Donations will be collected. In addition, “Wear Red for Haiti” – dress down wearing a red shirt and jeans - $1.00 – money collected will be donated to the relief fund.

We ask you to prayerfully consider donating to this worthy cause. Above all, please pray for the people of Haiti as they go through this terrible tragedy. We are praying that the Lord would not only provide comfort in this time of need, but would also work in the hearts of the men, women, and children of Haiti.

Dare To Be A Daniel

On Monday a special assembly was held to recognize 70 middle school students who recently completed the 13 week Dare To Be A Daniel program. The program was created by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and helps young people with their walk with the Lord, how to share their faith, and how to lead others to Christ. Students were awarded a certificate, and an information envelope that included a special dog tag necklace with the steps to salavation on the tags. We were also blessed by great personal testimonies by eight of our students. For more information, go to www.daretobeadaniel.com

A number of months ago we let you know that we had received a technology grant from Exxon. Our first projector, ceiling mount, and wireless pad for the teacher have been installed in Mrs. Sander's 4th grade classroom. Today I had a chance to watch them play Jeopardy Math! Many thanks to Exxon Mobile and Mr. O'Brien for helping us obtain the grant.

First Grader - SPECIAL AWARD

Thursday afternoon I learned that first grader, Ryder Naylor, was receiving a special award in Lee County. Here's a message from Mrs. Naylor explaining what happened:

."...he received the Do The Right Thing award at City Hall this afternoon! I truly apologize as I was informed by the representative that they would be sending you an invitation to the event...Ryder took the initiative on his own, with no suggestion or prompting, to clean up our street. He walks with his grandmother and he was very upset at the amount of trash along to sides of our road. One day he said he forgot something, he ran in the house and came out with plastic bags so he could clean up the road as they walk. Ryder now maintains the litter control on a fairly regular basis keeping our street and "God's world clean because it is what God would do" and he "wants to be like God". Thank you for your support. They will be showing the ceremony on channel 98 this Sat at 1pm and 7pm. You can also go online to watch the ceremony at this website: http://trms1.cityftmyers.com/Cablecast/Public/Show.aspx?ChannelID=1&ShowID=876

I would love to take all the credit for his desire to take care of his community but I am sure that what he is being taught and learning at school has also been a major influence on his choosing to do the right thing and take responsibility even if it isn't his job; I thank you for that. It is really nice to know that FMCS has my back as far as Ryder is concerned; if I somehow miss it on my end I know that he will catch it on your end! :>)"

Alumni Continue to Shine!

I was visiting the Bishop Verot website this morning (to thank Father Baretta for the great job that he has done at Verot since he is moving on), and saw these two stories on the front page about two of our alumni:

1. Mosher and Brown selected as top 100 volleyball players in country
Bishop Verot senior Libero, Katie Mosher and Setter, Ciarra Brown have been named to the National AVCA High School All American Top 100 List for 2009. Additionally, Katie Mosher recently earned the State of Florida AVCA "Player of the Week" for week Nov.8th-15th. Ciarra Brown was selected as the FACA District 3A "Player of the Year" and Katie Mosher, also on the FACA All Area District Team was selected to the FACA State of Florida "All Star" Team as one of 2 Liberos across the state and will compete in the FACA State All Star match on Dec.5th in Newport Ritchey, Florida. Congratulations to both Ciarra and Katie who also both recently signed National Letters of Intent to play NCAA Division 1 volleyball at Virginia Commonwealth and Florida State University respectively.

2. On Monday, Chase Marinell was the fifth Bishop Verot athlete to sign a letter of intent with a Division 1 program. Chase signed on to play golf at Liberty University. For the past two years Chase has been one of the top 5 high school golfers in the state of Florida. "Chase is probably the very best golfer ever at Verot” said Coach Mike Reese. In his four years at Verot, Chase has won many important amateur golf titles and qualified for prestigious national tournaments.
